I’m going to be using Photoshop here to inspect and manipulate the image, but there are also other free alternatives out there which can accomplish the same goal.

One of the first things I usually do when inspecting images for print is to look at the color mode. You can do this by going to IMAGE>MODE and taking a look at which color mode is checked. The color should either be CMYK or grayscale. You can see that the image in this example is grayscale.

Next, you can take a look at the image size. I usually try to determine how large I can make the image and then deciding whether or not that works for whatever you’re using it in. Take a look at the image size by going to IMAGE>IMAGE SIZE.

You can see the image is 18.3×12.2 inches with a resolution of 240 DPI (Dots Per Inch). Here at Monster Media, our printers require a resolution of 75 DPI to produce an acceptable print. This means that any dpi that is over DPI can be resampled to create a larger image if needed.

When you uncheck the “resample image” checkbox and change the resolution to 75 DPI, your image size will automatically adjust to show the maximum print size.

Our image turns out to have a maximum print size is 58.65×39.04 inches.

The last thing to do is zoom in to 100% and confirm that everything looks good. Here’s our image at 100%. You can see everything looks sharp and clear.

1. MIHO GASTROTRUCK, San Diego
This truckle uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients that are hand crafted into affordable and convenient dishes. Their wrap is primarily white with black art and splashes of color hidden inside their logo.

2. CHAIRMAN BAO, San Francisco
Chairman Bao comes from the foggy city of San Francisco. They serve Dim Sum day and night in their flash, heavily illustrated truck. They’ve chosen to use only the colors red, black, and white, which creates a heavy contrasting design, which is difficult to miss.

3. GREEN TRUCK, Los Angeles
Green Truck believes that a healthy environment is essential to healthy living. The vegetable oil that they use in their cooking gets repurposed later to run the car, The kitchen is solar powered, and they don’t use plastic. Their truck is wrapped in a dark army greens with subtle decals and design across the entire body. It’s low-key and it’s not over the top.

4. LATIN FARMER, Philadelphia
Latin farmer is a sustainable approach to Latin Food. They try to introduce people to the types of food that they grew up eating. Their truck is a bright green that feels fresh and appetizing. Their minimal graphics don’t overwhelm the viewer and their logo is easily visible.

5. STREET SWEETS, New York
This Truck is a european-inspired bakery on wheels. Their text heavy design gives the view a lot to look at and it’s filled with words describing their product so that the client can get a good idea of what they’re getting into.

State Farm completely wrapped two busses for this years Coachella. Graphics were printed on 3M Controltac V3 with a Gloss UV resistant over laminate. Graphics printed on our HP L65500 latex printer at a true 1200 dpi for the highest quality image and colors.

Sometimes it’s hard to anticipate the car’s curves and angles when you’re looking a two-dimensional image on the screen.

Most of the time, it helps to look at the car in person and take notes on the possible problem areas.

Bring a print-out of the vehicle. Take measurements. Circle the problem areas and scribble notes in the margin. The more information you can gather, the easier it becomes to identify the space that you have available in your artwork.

If you don’t have access to the car in person, grab pictures with google image search of the car and take quick notes on the different views of the car.

The best practice to help your design translate well when it’s applied to the car in the end is to keep important text and images away from the edges and allow plenty of extra bleed space at the edges of the artwork. If the text runs to the edge of the car, you risk cutting off important pieces of information.

Another thing that people find challenging when beginning to design a vehicle wrap is the question of composition. The lines and curves of the car interfere with the standard grids of composition.

Try following the body lines of the car and lining up the text elements with the windows.

Protip: Before you even begin the design, take out a pencil and do some sketches. This will give you a better idea of the way that everything will lay out on the car.

Installing a Carbon Fiber Roof Wrap and Carbon Fiber Hood Wrap

Installation is easy. This material is pressure activated and can be moved and re-positioned as you install it. The tools required are minimal. All that is required is a razor knife, squeegee, and heat-gun or hair dryer. Additional primer recommended for some edges, depends on the application. Average installation time runs between 45 minutes to 2 hours, it really just depends on if you have help from a friend or co-worker.

Carbon Fiber Wrap Reviewed

It’s love at first sight. We recently wrapped the hood of a custom Mitsubishi Lancer with 3M Di-Noc carbon fiber and the result was amazing. Everyone in the shop came down to take a look. Nobody could believe how realistic it looked. Some people actually said they liked the way it looked over the actual carbon fiber spoiler on the back. It was really cool to be able to compare the two on the same vehicle – real carbon fiber spoiler v. carbon fiber hood wrap – and see the difference.
